Garage Extension in Maidenhead for a Vintage Car Workshop

When Pete Sanders needed more room to store and work on his vintage car, his existing detached garage no longer provided enough practical space. After finding W S Brickwork & Building Services through Google, Pete contacted Wayne about a garage extension in Maidenhead that would create a larger workshop while working with the existing building and planning restrictions.

Creating More Space for a Vintage Car Workshop

Pete wanted to extend the rear of his detached garage to create enough room to comfortably store and restore his vintage vehicle.

He had already received another quotation for the project, but the cost was significantly higher than expected. After finding W S Brickwork & Building Services online, Pete spoke with Wayne about the proposed work. Wayne’s quotation came in on point, and following their conversation Pete was happy to proceed.

The agreed project involved extending the garage by approximately three metres at the rear, creating a structure around six metres wide.

Working Around the Garage Roof Height Restriction

One of the main challenges was the permitted height of the garage roof.

The existing building had a pitched hip roof, but the height restriction meant simply continuing that roof design across the extension was not suitable. The new structure therefore needed a different roofing solution that would provide the additional space while remaining within the required height.

The solution was to transition the existing pitched roof into a flat roof over the new section. The flat roof was finished with a durable EPDM rubber membrane, allowing the extension to work within the site’s restrictions while maintaining a clean transition between the existing and new construction.

Planning permission was required due to the size of the extension and the roof height considerations.

Foundations & Structural Work for the Garage Extension

The garage extension in Maidenhead involved considerably more than adding new brickwork to the back of the existing structure. The old and new sections needed to work together as one practical garage and workshop.

Work began by excavating and installing 450mm trench foundations for the new extension.

To connect the new floor with the existing garage floor, reinforcement bars were resin-fixed into the original concrete slab. These were tied into reinforcement mesh before the floor was concreted, helping create one continuous structure between the existing and extended areas.

The rear wall of the original garage also needed to be opened substantially. A bespoke four-metre lintel was installed to form the large opening between the two sections.

The extension was then constructed using single-skin brickwork, with a new doorway and window incorporated to improve access, natural light and usability.

From Detached Garage to Practical Workshop Space

Once completed, the extension gave Pete the additional room he needed to comfortably store his vintage car while also providing dedicated space to work on and restore it.

The larger footprint transformed the usefulness of the existing detached garage without requiring an entirely new standalone building. The structural opening connects the original and new areas, while the adapted roof design allowed the additional space to be created despite the height restriction.

The project brought together groundwork, reinforced concrete, structural work, brickwork and roofing within one build. Similar projects may also involve elements of our structural alterations and house extension services.

A Maidenhead Project That Led to a Customer Recommendation

The project did not end with the completed garage extension.

After the work was finished, Pete recommended W S Brickwork & Building Services to Barbara Reid, another homeowner in Maidenhead. That recommendation subsequently led to a substantial single-storey rear and side extension at Barbara’s 1950s detached property.

For us, referrals like this are meaningful because they come from customers who have experienced our communication and workmanship first-hand.

Frequently Asked Questions About Garage Extensions

Yes, in some circumstances an existing detached garage can be extended, but suitability depends on factors such as the existing structure, available space, proposed dimensions and planning requirements. Pete’s project involved extending an existing detached garage by approximately three metres to create additional workshop space.

It depends on the individual project. Planning permission was required for this garage extension because of its size and the height restrictions affecting the roof design. Homeowners should establish the planning position for their own property and proposed work before construction begins.

The appropriate method depends on the existing structure and project design. On this project, reinforcement bars were resin-fixed into the original concrete slab, tied into reinforcement mesh and concreted with the new floor to connect the existing and extended sections.

Where structurally appropriate and correctly designed, a substantial opening may be possible. For this project, the existing rear garage wall was opened using a bespoke four-metre lintel, allowing the original garage and new extension to function as one larger space.

This particular garage extension took around three months to complete. Timescales for other garage extensions will vary according to their size, structural requirements, specifications, approvals and site conditions.
