Creating More Space for a 1950s Detached Home
Barbara wanted to create more usable space at ground-floor level and had been considering an extension for some time. Getting a dog helped prompt the decision to move forward with the project.
The existing layout no longer provided the space needed for the kitchen, dining and storage requirements she had in mind. The aim was to extend both the rear and side of the house, creating a more practical layout for everyday life.
The finished design was intended to provide:
- A larger open-plan kitchen
- A spacious dining area
- A dedicated utility room
- Additional storage within the roof and ceiling space
- Further storage running along the side of the property
Building a Substantial Rear & Side Extension
The project involved demolishing the existing garage and opening up the rear and side of the property to create a much larger kitchen and dining area.
During the structural work, the existing house was temporarily supported with steel needles while two steel beams were installed. One beam was supported on the new extension blockwork, while the other connected to a steel post within the existing wall, helping create the open-plan layout Barbara wanted.
The roof design combined a hipped roof with an EPDM flat roof, allowing additional storage to be created within the roof space. Redland 49 tiles were used on the pitched section.
W S Brickwork & Building Services also supported Barbara through the planning process and introduced her to an architect Wayne had worked with previously. The extension was overseen by Maidenhead Building Control.

Transforming the Kitchen, Dining & Utility Space
The main benefit of the extension was the additional usable space it created inside Barbara’s home.
Rather than simply adding another room, the project changed how the downstairs area could be used. The larger footprint made it possible to create a more spacious kitchen and dining environment, giving the household greater flexibility for everyday use and entertaining.
A separate utility room was also incorporated, helping keep practical household functions away from the main kitchen and living areas.
Storage was another important part of the brief. Additional space was incorporated into the roof or ceiling area, together with storage running down the side of the property.
Barbara later said the work had improved the home “very much so”, reflecting the practical difference the additional space made.
Communication, Cleanliness & Professionalism Throughout the Build
Barbara chose W S Brickwork & Building Services through a word-of-mouth recommendation.
During the project, she highlighted the communication around pricing and materials, saying that queries were handled quickly and that clear updates were provided throughout the work.
She also noted the team’s reliability and professionalism, including arriving early and dealing with administration clearly.
Cleanliness was another important part of her experience. Despite the scale of the renovation, Barbara said she was able to continue living in the house throughout the work because the team kept the site tidy, clean and organised.
The project also involved specialist trades where required, with Wayne arranging trusted contacts for work such as electrics and plastering.

Finishing, Checking & the Completed Result
Barbara also highlighted the thorough finishing and checking carried out towards the end of the project.
This attention to the final stages helped ensure the completed extension looked and felt right once the main construction work was finished.
The result was a larger, more practical ground-floor layout with improved kitchen, dining, utility and storage space, giving the property greater flexibility for everyday use.
Barbara’s feedback following the extension was:
“I had a beautiful solid extension from this company, I highly recommend, very professional and high standard work.”

Further Work After the House Extension
Barbara said she would recommend W S Brickwork & Building Services and would use the company again.
She later did exactly that, asking the team to return around a year after the extension to build a new patio at the property.
Repeat work following a substantial extension provides useful context for prospective customers considering their own building project, particularly where several home improvements may be completed over time.
